Happy Tuesday!  Can you believe it…one week from today is June 1^st.  Where did the school year go?  I just uncovered some brand new school supplies I stashed away last August.  Good thing they don't turn green and get mushy...like leftovers…but that's another story.  It is a new week and some new info is coming your way.

Happy Monday!  It looks like we have a beautiful spring week ahead of us – a nice reward after a step back to early April weather last week. 

 

At last Tuesday's PFO meeting Jolen Neumann mentioned how you can support Leopold by searching or shopping the internet.  Below is more information on this program…thanks Jolen!

 

Did you know that Leopold can earn a donation every time you search the Internet? Or that a percentage of every purchase you make online can go to our school as well? Well, it can!
 
GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!
 
GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 30 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, eBay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you'll be supporting Leopold!
 
If 100 of us used GoodSearch.com to search the Internet 2x's/day for a year, we could earn $730.00 for Leopold school.  If 1,000 of us did the exact same thing, we could earn $7300.00 for our school.  Add in percentages from shopping online through GoodShop.com and imagine what we could do for Leopold.

Math and Science night for grades 3-5 is tomorrow night, May 18^th from 6:30 – 8:00pm.  Kids and adults can participate in a variety of activities and learn a new game at the same time.  I guess its time to answer the question…Are you smarter than a 5^th grader?

Message from the president..

Good Morning!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend.  Just a quick reminder that our final PFO meeting of the 2009-10 school year is tomorrow evening, May 11^th, at 7:00 in the Leopold Library.  We have 2 special guests joining us:

  + Eric Miller, strings teacher, will share information about the 5^th grade strings program at Leopold.  If you are the parent of a 4^th grade student you will especially want to attend and find out more about how your child can participate next year.  If you do not or no longer have a 4^th grader, you'll still want to hear about this fine arts opportunity available to our kids at Leopold.

  + Professor Sam J. Dennis from UW-Madison's Department of Landscape Architecture will share with us his students' conceptual designs for the outdoor space at Leopold.  During the spring semester his students reviewed the Leopold grounds, analyzed needs and identified potential uses for the school property.  Professor Dennis will display several of these designs and invite comments from our community.  We hope to continue this collaboration in the future.  Please join us as we review their work to date and find out what comes next.

News from the Prez...

Welcome to May – the last full month of the 2009-10 school year!  Where has the time gone?  It seems like yesterday my kids were picking out new school supplies and here we are counting down the days until summer break.  Before they trade back packs for swim fins there are a few things left to say and do...

 

May 3 – 7 is Staff Appreciation Week at Leopold.  The Leopold LMC will be transformed on Tuesday, May 4th for the annual Staff Appreciation luncheon.  On Friday, May 7^th staff will enjoy a continental breakfast courtesy of Mr. Burkholder, Mrs. Huber and the PFO.  A huge THANK YOU goes out to Chris Hammer and Deanna Jaworski for organizing events and activities this week and to everyone who has donated money, time and food to help show our appreciation to the great staff at Leopold who work with our children every day. 

 

Leopold Noodles Night is tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4^th from 4 – 8pm.  Visit Noodles and Company on Triverton Pike Drive off McKee Road in Fitchburg, mention you are there supporting Leopold Elementary and 25% of your purchase will be donated to the Leopold PFO.  Dine in and carry out orders all qualify so please consider eating out tomorrow to help the PFO support Leopold.

 

Wednesday, May 5^th from 7 – 8:30 pm is the 5^th grade parent orientation meeting at Cherokee Middle School, 4301 Cherokee Dr.  Call the Cherokee office at 204-1240 if you have questions.

 

On Thursday, May 6^th you can also support Leopold by making a purchase at MyMenu on McKee Road near Super Target.  MyMenu will donate 10% of your purchase to the PFO when you mention Leopold at check out. 

 

Saturday, May 8^th is World Fair Trade Day.  You can celebrate the day AND support Leopold when you shop at Fair Indigo at Hilldale.  Fair Indigo is located in the Outdoor Shops at Hilldale Mall (Midvale Blvd/University Ave) in Madison.  Saturday store hours are 10AM - 9PM and the fundraiser will be in effect for the entire day.  Below is an excerpt from the flyer sent home via backpack express.

 

    What is World Fair Trade Day?

 

    A Global Event:  On Saturday, May 8^th, people in 70 countries worldwide will hold events to mark World Fair Trade Day and highlight the importance and benefits of Fair Trade.

 

    A Local Impact:  We truly believe that one of the best ways to help a community prosper is through education. To support this concept at a local level, we celebrate World Fair Trade Day annually by giving back to area schools. 100% of our sales from May 8th will be donated; half will go directly to the area school of your choice, and the other half will go to the Fair Indigo Foundation to support education globally.

 

    How can MY SCHOOL benefit?

      1.  Shop at Fair Indigo on Saturday, May 8^th.

      2.  Fair Indigo will donate 100% of sales, so the entire amount* you spend will be donated to education!  Half will go directly to the school of your choice (i.e. Leopold Elementary) and the other half will go to the Fair Indigo Foundation, which supports education around the world.  For example: If you spend $20, our school gets $10 and the foundation gets $10.  If you spend $250, our school gets $125 and the foundation gets $125.  Get the idea?  It's that simple!

 

     (*Please note: This event applies solely to merchandise purchased in-store on 5/8/10. Catalog and internet orders or gift certificate purchases are not eligible for donation.)

 

The Leopold Garage sale on May 1^st was a great success!  There were shoppers lining up outside the cafeteria before 8:00 am just itching to grab boxes and bags full of great bargains.  Thank you to all the families and staff who donated items and helped set up on Friday and those who worked and shopped on Saturday.  The garage sale brought in almost $1200 which is divided equally among the 6 grades for field trip funds.  Unsold merchandise was donated to Goodwill, further helping our community and beyond. 

 

Well over 100 people attended the Bike Rodeo on Saturday afternoon.  There were kids riding bikes, mechanics checking bikes, and parents guiding bike riders through a safety course, serving food and even a few pulling weeds on a bright, sunny Saturday in May.  Thanks to everyone who organized this fun event, those who helped and to Budget Bicycle Center and Madison Department of Transportation staff for their partnership.
